I like how she sticks her pinkies out.
Very cute.
From: Dean (Thu Mar 25 23:08:24 2004)
It's a fine line, Tony, I admit. But it's there.
From: Jinx (Fri Mar 26 13:02:25 2004)
I agree with Dean, Tony.
Mandy's appeal is BECAUSE she is 'innocent' not sleezey.
Like I said somewhere else on this site; If you want 'cheese' and 'sleeze' go buy a copy of "DANGER GIRL" or something.
I for one find Deans work a BREATH OF FRESH AIR, an oasis, if you will in a sea of slimey, anti-male, sleezey, masculine butch-type female characters. I am GLAD I found Deans very PLEASENT art!
I thought sweet and innocent was dead 'till I came here.

Dean, Have you ever hrerd of Preston Blair?
And how about having one of your pin ups do the comic of my forst idea.
From: Dean (Tue Mar 30 16:44:12 2004)
Yes, Tony, I've heard of Preston Blair. In fact, I knew Preston Blair, and I draw on an animation desk that I got from him. When I first started in animation, I worked at a studio in NYC that he freelanced for. A wonderful guy, and one of the best animators ever (Jinx, I'd be happy to be spoken of in the same breath as Preston). He animated, among other things, the hippos and alligators in FANTASIA. A master. And I, too, learned from his book as a kid. By all means, get it. There are two, in fact, published by Walter Foster.
From: Tony (Wed Mar 31 15:58:06 2004)
Thank you Dean, is his art as great as yours? Art like Mandy.

Bay the way what do you think of my idea of the Mandy and the butterfly
comic strip?

Coued you explean more on way you
don't like my ideas?
From: Dean (Wed Mar 31 23:55:25 2004)
Tony, I don't think a nude with a butterfly has a ten-year storyline. That's why no comic strip based on that one picture. Oh, maybe a comic strip that lasts a week, but no one would buy that. And Preston Blair was one of the great animators of all...wait, I already explained this.
And if I reject your ideas it's because they are too limited, as explained above, or because they tend to be pornographic, or at least of questionable taste. Which is why I delete your messages at times.
As for learning to draw cartoons, get the Preston Blair book.
From: Dean (Sun Apr 4 12:46:02 2004)
The book is called simply: ANIMATION, by Preston Blair. It's published by Walter Foster and you can find it in art supply stores. It only costs a couple of bucks. Try it, you'll like it.
If I decide to do a Mandy comic strip or comic book, I'll do one. If I don't, I won't. That's the best I can tell you.
From: Jinx (Sun Apr 4 22:50:57 2004)
...Geeze...,
I was trying to HELP! I didn't mean to get anything started! Sorry, Dean.

From: Tony (Thu Apr 8 16:51:23 2004)

From: Tony (Thu May 13 15:33:28 2004)
I have a Danger Girl comic, it is not
cheezy & sleezy it seems as clan as Mandy is exeped for a littel bit of cusseing. Abby Chase is not niked init.
From: Jinx. (Fri May 14 13:38:59 2004)
My biggest gripe about the "DANGER GIRLS" is that they are crass, and act like men.
MANDY on the other hand is tasteful and acts like a GIRL, not a guy.
That is SORELY missing in this culture today, Girls who actually ACT like girls.
That is why MANDY is so refreshing.
Never change her, Dean! Please!
From: Tony (Fri May 14 16:44:17 2004)
Jinx, What do you exped the "DANGER GIRLS" are crame fighters thay are supost to be like that, Mandy was in
Playboy,

isent ther a way Dean coued draw tastfoly naced?

The DANGER GIRLS are The DANGER GIRLS and Mandy is Mandy. Think about
it and let me know, and explean.

From: Jinx. (Mon May 17 00:16:18 2004)
I just don't like females that act like males. And I don't understand any (straight) guy who does.
From: Tony (Mon May 17 16:30:46 2004)
Jinx, What about Whonder Women, Batgirl,
& Supergirl. what the diferns?
From: Jinx. (Mon May 17 22:25:50 2004)
You are right Tony. Batgirl Wonderwoman and Supergirl are crime fighters too. But I don't remember them acting like men. Especialy to the degree that the "Danger girls" do.
All I'm saying is that Dean's character Mandy is a refreshing change of pace from the now cliched "Manly-girls" one sees everywhere, these days.

There is an old Indian saying; "If you are an eagle BE an eagle, If you are a sparrow BE a sparrow."
From: Tony (Tue May 18 15:37:52 2004)
Jinx, I have two theing to say,

ferst look up the pouty in pink pic i said that i went you to know. Also what duse Mandy have to do with The DANGER GIRLS iney way? What about heolsumle naked?
From: Dean (Wed May 19 00:53:51 2004)
Thanks again, Jinx, for the concise explanation of what I'd hoped was Mandy's appeal. There are lots of wholesomely nude Mandys in my sketchbooks, by the way, particularly the second one, coming soon.
And I like that old Indian saying, although I like to think of Mandy as more of a swan, perhaps.
From: Tony (Wed May 19 16:35:21 2004)
Ok Dean, Could you do comic of this pic? No porn, No nuodaty (exseped for
what your yust to.) How about the pale?
From: Tony (Wed May 19 16:40:54 2004)
Dean, What do the wholesomely nude Mandy's look like, colud you tell me?
From: Marvin Monroe (Wed May 19 23:11:23 2004)
They probably look like Mandy, wholsomely nude.
From: Tony (Thu May 20 16:36:52 2004)
I know that, Marvin. I ment what is she doing in them?

Dean, Have you ever drawin a super hero conic? Becos i need sune tips on
nameing thim, your a trefick artist iney way. How did you lern to draw such sexy girls?

I my self like to draw, i do have how to draw books, whay is it whin i ask if you wolud draw Mandy as a 16 year old girl you don't anser?

And bey the way Mandy looks so slem & sexy. how duse she do it?
From: Tony (Thu May 20 16:40:52 2004)
That (n) in sune is supost to be an (M)
& i forgot the (s) at the end of (comics)
From: Marco (Tue May 25 15:44:05 2004)
Tony, I wouldn't recommend those "how to draw books". They're traps - they give you a simple formula which simply doesn't cross the gap to professional illustration. Grab yourself tons of reference material from all artists (including Dean), and make it your priority to go life drawing. Once you start to understand how the figure is constructed, you'll begin to see where Dean's approach comes from. What separates a Dean Yeagle girl from a real girl is knowing what's appealing, and what can be excluded. The appealing details are made more graphic by playing with their shapes. This is something no book can explain - you just have to get out there and start your journey and get a grasp on it yourself. Not even an instructional book by Dean Yeagle will replace life drawing.
From: Tony (Wed Jun 2 15:03:33 2004)

Jinx, I might just have a fetish or something, but I don't see much wrong in girls acting like boys... I like girls who like to wrestle and run around and do all sorts of boy stuff. But I guess that if they spit, scratch and burp, I wouldn't stay too close. I doubt the DANGER GIRLS do that sort of stuff.
From: Jinx. (Sun Aug 1 13:52:52 2004)
Well, what I mean is, is that Dean's girls physicaly behave like most REAL girls. The tilt of the hips, with one knee bent, the soft facial expressions, the feminine hand gestures and even the way Dean poses his girls for sleep. Lauren just pointed out recently that real girls DO sleep like Mandy in the adoarable "ZZZZ" picture Dean has of Mandy sleeping with Scoots, posted here.
And yeah, I think watching Mandy working on a car engine, or something would be okay to watch. She's obviously book-smart, I like that about her.
But when I reference the "DANGER GIRLS" as acting "manish", Here I stick to my guns. The Danger girls stand like men, most of there facial expressions are manly, there hand geatures tend to be masculine, they generaly sit like guys, they talk like biker guys, they have no class (un-like Mandy) they beat up guys who are 10 times bigger and stronger than they are, And I wouldn't be suprised to hear the Danger girls belch, cut the heese or see them scratch themselves. They LOOK like girls but they do not ACT like girls.
From: Jinx. (Sun Aug 1 13:53:46 2004)
Oops!
That should have been "cut the CHEESE" not the "heese".

From: Jinx. (Wed Aug 4 12:32:23 2004)
No, I mean act like real girls.
I'm an artist, too and I do my share of "girl art". To do so, I have to observe REAL girls. In fact that's where my best inspiration comes from.
MOST girls act the way Dean presents them. The only girls I see that act like the DANGER GIRLS are the ones that come out of the lesbian bar a few blocks from my apartment.

OK, Jinx, where do you see these 'real girls'?

Not trying to be argumentative here...just trying to understand...

The 'girls' I typically see are professional women...engineers, business majors/MBAs, lawyers...that don't really have girly girl innocence, habits, & idiosyncrasies like Mandy. Nor do they have Danger Girl man-ishness, but somewhere in the middle.

Tho I admittedly need to get out more. ;-)

Girly girls are out there, but not like in the '50s.

Mandy: The Grace Kelly of the 21st century
From: Jinx. (Tue Aug 10 12:24:28 2004)
I see the girls you're talking about, too, Don. The ones that are "in between" so to speak.
But I see alot of "girly girls" where I live (the mid west). I see them at the grocery store, the movie theater, the bus stop, the mall, the post office, at Burger King, the local college, Saw at least one VERY "girly girl" when I took my cat to the vet this week end, at the gym, just walking down the street, Lots of places. These are the girls that inspire my art work. The others, well, not so much. You can see all sorts of different types of females all over the U.S.. There are still ALOT of "Girly girls" around. (thankfully)
But rarely do I see the loogie spitting, man hating, boy-women that seem so popular in alot of today's "girl art".
The one big turn off for me is the "man-hater" types. I do see a fair number of them in real life as well as in comics and other media. What the big hang up on them that alot of men have these days is a mystery to me. That is like Black folks liking White folks who hate Black folks.
Too much hate and sexualized violence out there. That is why I love Dean's work so much.
It's playful, It's nice, It's not smutty, Mandy is a decent person who doesn't seem to hate men or ANYONE for that matter. And she gives a voice to all the "girly girls" who aren't ashamed of being female, in a culture that all too often discourages femininity in women.
Gals, you can still be feminine and still be equal! There's nothing wrong with being female. And nothing wrong with acting like one.
From: Dah N'Ke H'Tae (Tue Aug 10 19:09:20 2004)
(ooo, I like this new comment interface...)

I live in the MidWest, too...near the Birthplace of the Land Yacht.

Take this rendering for example. I honestly never witnessed a girl/woman drop a petal (nor hanky) like Mandy is doing here. I rarely see someone stick out their pinky nor hold a flower like Mandy is...

&, oh god to I miss pig- (and pony-) tails...still see'em but not enough.... :-)

Y'know, just thinking here...would you agree that the younger a woman is, the more likely she is to be a girly girl?

My thought is that the older one gets, the more confidence is gained in being a independant person...and relying much less on 'traditional' girly girl cues...

Getting Phil O'Sofical here...

(But I'm with you on your distaste for man-ish women)
From: Brain Digger (Wed Aug 11 07:36:30 2004)
@ Jinx: Oh man, "man haters" are such horrible pop-calture crap. It's one of those passing things on MTV. It's rare to see anything interesting on MTV.

I'm unlucky enough to actually see more "Danger Girls" than "girly girls".

Anyway, she loves us. You can easily count all 6 leaves left. ^_^
should've drawn the flower more blurry or with many more leaves.
From: Jinx. (Wed Aug 11 13:11:56 2004)
Yeah, i think you might have something there as to whether or not younger girls tend to be more "girly". I think there's alot of truth to that.
As far as doing things like "sticking a pinky out", I see alot of girls do that, particularly when drinking from a cup or something. But I don't see too many holding flowers, so I don't know if they would do it then, or not. Maybe some would, maybe some wouldn't. I think Dean gets his inspiration from real life, so Maybe they do that, I don't know.
As far as "man-ish" women are conserned, yeah MOST of them DO seem to be older women, now that I think about it. I wonder why that is, exactly. Do women's bodies produce more testosterone as they get older?
Just a thought.
