Animation is dead, haven't you heard? Eisner says so, and he oughta know, standing there with his bloody knife...
I'd love to animate Mandy, but I'd hate to see her in TV style. Good old, never-gonna-be-done-again 2D feature animation style is what she needs.
Sorry, just being bitter for a moment. It'll come back (I keep telling myself).

Yeah. I'd hate to see her computer animated.
You are right Mandy needs the human touch that only traditional animation would give her. C.G.A has it's place but I hope traditional animation can still be kept alive.
Eisner? he's a jerk, in my oppinion. Walt Disney is probably shakeing his fist at him from above.

I didn't mean to say 2D animation's dead, just that the big studios are trying to kill it, and it's gasping for breath. But Mandy needs to be 2D, if she were to be animated. Well done, well animated, good old-fashioned Disney-style. But fat chance of that, I'm afraid, although I could animate a very small piece if I get the chance.

Yes I would, indeed, like to see Mandy animated.
But only in the way Dean describes.
Mandy animated any other way would be like doing the "Monna Lisa" in crayon, or something.
It is with this chosen media that Mandy gets much of her charm. If Dean were to animate her in CGI, she would lose much of her personality and would, in effect, become a sterile shadow.
Sorry, but, no, Mandy needs good ol' fashioned hand animation, in my humble oppinion.

Thanks, Dan - yeah, I liked the design, mostly, of Home on the Range. Nice to see a cartoony cartoon. Kind of retro 60's style, reminded me of Windwagon Smith. But it just didn't have enough gravitas (or something) for a feature, not that I want pretentiousness, which is all most recent features have had. Just seemed awfully slight, and was a bigtime lead balloon at the box office...so it's not bringing back anything, I'm afraid. And FANTASIA 2000 was Roy's baby, and we know how likely THAT is to continue at the moment. But hope springs eternal. I'm not giving up.

I did a GOOGLE search (key words "Master" "Manos" and "Torgo") and found that "Torgo" is a character from a really bad movie in the late 60's called ""MANOS" the hands of fate". The "Master" is this vampire-like guy that collects wives, and Torgo is his man-servant. So that is what our "Torgo" has been refering to!

Tony, buddy, here's the thing: Mandy was born into the 2-D world, and she should stay there. Did you ever see the Simpson's Halloween episode where Homaer and Bart go into the "Third Dimension?" Sure, it looked cool, but it just wasn't right. The same goes for South Park. It would just look dumb in 3-D. Mandy is the same way. She's fine the way she is. Cool?
From:
Jinx.
(Wed Jun 23 13:02:10 2004)
Sorry, Tony. But I gotta go with Farva on this. much of Mandy's charm comes from the fact she is loveingly rendered by a human HAND not a cold, passionless computer. 3-D would rob her of alot of her personality, and Mandy is sexy not just for being well endowed but because she has such personality. She needs those little nuances(SP?) that only hand rendering can give her, to keep her "real".
A 3-D Mandy would be ...okay..., I gues, but hand drawn Mandy is the only REAL Mandy!
From:
Dean
(Wed Jun 30 10:05:36 2004)
Here's the link to 3D Mandy - as you see, she's hand-drawn (in fact, just one of the pics posted here), but the images have been subtly manipulated so that when you cross your eyes, it becomes 3D. Give it a try, but don't break your eyes - I'm the only one in my family who can see it. http://p198.ezboard.com/fbellefreefrm17.showMessage?topicID=265.topic

Tony, Dean was being sarcastic about the anime thing. At least I'm pretty sure he was. And I have to disagree with you about Buzz Lightyear. He just doesn't look right in 2-D. I think maybe it's because we first saw him in 3-D and he looked so good that anything else just doesn't work. Same goes for Mandy. As for the plethora of ideas you send Dean's way, you gotta remember man that he does this for a living. If he tossed out all these requests for free where would he get money for more colored pencils? And I for one could not handle it if Dean ran out of colored pencils.

Where I live, 16 year old girls look more or less like Mandy here. Just gotta look hard between all the ugly ones, and really, there's lots of girls that look great FROM BEHIND. But occationaly, I see some real beauties.
I said this because even with the way Mandy is now, you could just say she's 16-18 years old. 23 is also a erasonable age, but the physical change is not that noticable.
A more childish look at Mandy would eally be great, though. Some drawing of her with a childish outfit...
ToRgO, I really admire your ability to act out the character. I love it when people come online and simply lose their every day life persona and turn into a totaly diffrent character. Most people on the other hand, just lose their manners when they come online instead.
Dean, would you never even think of doing even a short animation just for fun? even if it's all a bunch of sketchy lines? There's a computer program called Easy Toon which anyone can use to create their own black and white GIF animations. If you get more serious beyond black and white, you can use other programs to add color and what not to a GIF made with Easy Toon. All that's needed is either a tablet or good skill with a mouse. My friend played around with it with a tablet and some of his stuff really impressed me.
As far as I know, the program is free (havn't checked in detail) and could probebly be downloaded off of known websites like download.com.

"ANIMTION IS DEAD" Then what do call CGI? I say it's 3D ANIMTION.... THINK ABOUT IT.

I stumbled upon this while googling my name out of sheer boredom, and I must say! Your art is spectacular! I love how you manage to make it sexy, yet classy at the same time, and the fact that you keep everything strategically covered up..it really makes you use your imagination! I love it!

That is the whole appeal to Mandy. THAT'S why I love Dean's work so much. No raunch, no sleaze just a very cute, very sexy girl with a lot of charm.
Something that is sorely missing in most of today's 'girl art'.

Dean, I have a question.
On the off chance you were given the oportunity to sit at the creative helm of a full-length 2-D animated feature staring Mandy, who, in your mind do you see as playing her?
Just out of idle curiosity.

Will - I assume you mean her voice? I don't know - I've been pondering that for a while. She needs a quirky voice, but not a dumb-sounding one. And are you offering to fund the feature? C'mon, you'll be my new best friend...!

Incidentally i think a full length feature staring Mandy would be a wonderful investment, We already have a market base & I think there's a marketing niche. But being a college student at the moment my monetary assets are not exactly overpowering. I still think it's a great idea Dean!

Oh, yeah. And what about Jennifer Love Hewitt? She has a nice voice with a sweet inflection. She also has this particularly play-full way of speaking, at times. (As does Jill Whitlow) Very cute.

Jill Withlow & Jennifer Love Hewitt would both be excelent choices for Mandy's vocal encarnation. My personal choice would be Tara Strong, A voice over acterss with amazing vocal versatility. But an one of these actresses would be able to encapture Mandy sublimely.

Seems to me the actresses in old movies have more personality in general - Jean Arthur, but pitched a little higher. If you don't know who she is, you must get TCM immediately - there's not a moment to lose!

Then of course, there's Marilyn - but then, she couldn't be anyone but Marilyn. Too much of an icon to submerge into a cartoon character. Then, of course, there's the problem of her being 43 years post-life.

Yes Torgo, Marilyn Monroe is indeed dead. There's really no one in this generation who can compare to how she redefined celebrity and sexuality. However if someone who prosonifies such a coveted level of beauty she would be the obvious choice to provide Mandy's voice for an annimated feature.
From:
Will
(Fri Oct 14 16:33:54 2005)
Dean also brings up the observation that many actress today dont, or are unable to convey the many layred personality, distinct psyche and balance of innocence & sexuality that mandy obviously posesses. Casting her voice for an annimated feature would be an incredibly daunting task.

Oh, one more thing. I dont have a recordign of Tara Strong's voice, But if you listen to her voice when she played Batgirl in "The New Batman Adventures" you can hear that wonderful mix of the bubbly & purky and the low and sultry that I think Mandy's voice would sound similar to.

Dean

Good call Jinx, I could never really see Cree Summer as playing Mandy (unless someone made a Blaxploytation version of a full length Mandy movie)
Also, I did a more thourough search of Jill Whitlow's credits, She is quite as tallented as you implied, And would be a superb choice for Mandy.
